FROM the LEFT: Independent Journalists and Photographers claim “Journalism is Under Attack”

“Journalism is Not a Crime” rally took place in Foley Square, New York City, on October 1, 2025.

Following the raid/arrest of a photojournalist + ICE assaults on press at 26 Federal Plaza (amid nationwide spike in assaults on press), a press conference/rally was organized by photojournalists (on the Left) in protest against attacks on the press in NYC & beyond…..to advocate for First Amendment protections following multiple incidents of alleged assault and intimidation by law enforcement (specifically ICE agents at 26 Federal Plaza Immigration Court).

,….the last time the NYC press corp organized a public demo, it was a vigil for journalists killed in Gaza. At the time, the number was 36.

.This event was a “press-led rally” organized by a group of independent journalists and photographers (from the Left)

It is extremely rare for NYC press to organize demos, but in both instances it’s largely attended by street press, not desk jockeys…to advocate for enhanced press protections, dropping charges against press, and defending First Amendment-protected activity”

. The following is a list that included NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. I did not stay to hear all the speakers.

Key individuals involved in the rally or who spoke were:

  • Talia Jane: An independent reporter and one of the primary organizers who addressed the crowd and explained the incidents that led to the rally.
  • Jumaane Williams: The New York City Public Advocate, who spoke about the violence faced by journalists from law enforcement and called on the Manhattan District Attorney to drop charges against a photojournalist.
  • Alexa Wilkinson: A New York-based photojournalist whose arrest and subsequent hate crime charges (which she pled not guilty to) were a central focus of the protest.
  • Ian Bartlett: Another journalist mentioned by organizers as having been arrested by police.
  • Neil Constantine and Josh Pacheco: Photographers/journalists who were thanked by organizers for their involvement.
  • An amNewYork reporter and a Turkish journalist (Vural Elibol) who were reportedly assaulted by ICE agents at 26 Federal Plaza Immigration Court shortly before the rally.
  • Michael Loeb: An individual who spoke during a press conference segment, raising concerns about journalistic practices regarding the privacy of children’s faces.

Also, Leigh Kunkel: A Chicago journalist who spoke via phone about being shot with a pepper ball by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

The raison d’etre for the rally remained Alexa Wilkinson:

.Police arrested and charged photographer Alexa Wilkinson with aggravated harassment and hate crimes. The speakers urged people to contact the Manhattan District Attorney’s office to demand the charges against Alexa Wilkinson be dropped. The charges stemmed from a July 30 incident Wilkinson reported on in which protesters covered the NY Times headquarters in Manhattan with graffiti.

Protesters charged the New York Times with complicity in the Gaza genocide because of its pro-Zionist reporting and editorial policies.

Wilkinson allegedly shared screenshots of an X post that read–‘They hanged newspaper editors at Nuremberg’ (a reference to the Nazi journalist Julius Streicher.)

The complaint said Wilkinson captioned the screenshots with the phrase ‘Looking at you (Joseph Kahn),’ referring to the NYTimes’ executive editor.”

“The New York Times has an endless list of ties to the “IOF” and “israel”, as well as a clear bias towards Zionist and imperialist propaganda which manufacturers consent for the horrors we are live-streaming from Gaza day-after-day.”

While the New York Times and its executive editor Joe Kahn have been targeted by various groups for their war crimes, the building itself has remained relatively untouched …. until now. …

4 am on July 30th-“An anonymous people-of-conscience escalated an ongoing protest of the NYT for their complicity and manufactured consent in the genocide of Palestinians.

This legacy media outlet proves daily how embedded it is with empire and colonial power players. Shame on the NYT and everyone who’s remained not only silent, but complicit.”

In conclusion,” Alexa Wilkinson is facing felony hate crime charges for documenting protesters’ vandalism of the New York Times office in Manhattan and social media posts critiquing the publication’s executive editor.”

READ THE DOSSIER:The New York Times has been a zionist rag for decades. One look at the paper’s present and past staff proves that the paper’s racist and islamophobic coverage isn’t a matter of simple Western ignorance or run-of-the-mill media bias, but intentional and ideologically driven journalistic malpractice.

In our new dossier, published at newyorkwarcrimes.com, we show how—across each section and rank of the warmongering Times—you will find explicit connections between the paper’s staff and the “IOF”, Zionist lobby groups, and Israeli think-tanks. These connections to violent entities and the israel lobby should be considered conflicts-of-interest…” [newyorkwarcrimes.com/dossier]

Across the country,
press freedoms are under attack

Do ICE and the NYPD assault journalists in New York City?
That is the question

….World Socialist Website answers the claims….

Reject imperial propaganda.
Boycott, divest, and unsubscribe

“Here in the so-called land of the free-press, journalists who dare to fulfill their mandate to document reality and report the truth are facing escalating retaliation. They are surveilled, raided, harassed, assaulted and arrested for capturing the moments Empire would prefer to stay hidden.” [Writers against the War on Gaza]

NY Lawyers Rally & March: ICE Out of the Courts!

On March 15, 2018,  at 4pm in Foley Square, Legal Aid Attorneys, Public Defenders, Unions and Community Groups came together to speak to the press.

They they marched to the Office of Court Administration to demand Chief Judge Janet DiFiore take immediate action to protect their clients: “ICE OUT OF THE COURTS!”

Their demands focused on DiFiore:After months of protesting, multiple walk-outs and rallies across the city and hours of advocacy, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore has still not heeded the call of New York City’s immigrant communities to prohibit ICE agents from entering NY Courts.

NOT Every one present agreed with this position.

He did get photo bombed at one point.

“This policy of continued cooperation with ICE puts our clients in danger, robs them of their right to due process, and makes the Office of Court Administration complicit in Trump’s horrific mass deportation agenda.”

The time has come to act. #ICEMUSTGO #DUEPROCESSNOW

This protest was hosted by Association of Legal Aid Attorneys – UAW 2325 and ImmigrantDefenseProject.org

You Can’t DEPORT a Movement-Foley Sq- NYC

Feb. 10, 2018 – Foley Square, NYC
9 am to Noon

In the words of the hard-core left hosting this rally, You Can’t Deport a MOVEMENT!  “There is a new stay for Ravi’s deportation […] this moment matters now MORE THAN EVER! We must stand up for the countless thousands of Ravis and Jeans and show that we are powerful together! “

“We leave no one behind! ICE cannot target our leaders OR our communities!”

Co-Sponsoring Organizations from the LEFT include: New Sanctuary Coalition, New York Immigration Coalition, 32BJ SEIU, Bronx Immigration Partnership, Copwatch Patrol Unit, Critical Resistance, Detention Watch Network, Desis Rising Up and Moving (DRUM), Democratic Socialists of America, Domestic Workers Alliance, Equality Labs, Immigrant Defense Project, Interfaith Center of New York,

Video Part 1

[Face Book] “ICE is escalating its attack on immigrants and only our movement can stop them […] demand a #NEWSANCTUARYCITY”

The New Sanctuary Coalition (founded in 2007) acts as a network of interfaith congregations and organizations that stand with families and communities resisting detention and deportation.

Always encouraging to see JDL-NY giving THANKS to ICE! (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)

Still, [Face Book] moans from the LEFT droned on: “We need to stop the escalation of ICE and the president’s attacks on immigrant communities, including targeting dissidents for deportation…”

— “targeting” FELONS? BAD ICE. BAD U.S. Government —

“… (ICE) threatening Dreamers with detention, ICE efforts to infiltrate courts and churches and up to the racist rhetoric of the president and his office.”

“In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we’re asking friends and fellow activists to help hand deliver a message of love for all immigrants to ICE’s office by showing […] solidarity with Ravi, Dreamers, TPS recipients, workers, families and community members.”

“We’ll use messages of love and solidarity to combat the “good immigrant, bad immigrant” narrative. We resent the pressure on immigrants to prove their social or economic worth in order to justify their humanity.”

“This is a fight against this racist administration’s attempt to overstep the constitution and cherry pick who has the right to freedom and who will be terrorized into silence.”

“… this movement has deep roots and cannot be eradicated. We’re going to show them that you can’t deport a movement.”

Ravi’s status managed a reprieve—again: Immigrant rights activist temporarily avoids deportation.

“Justice was restored today( 2-09-18), at least temporarily, as Mr. Ragbir is now able to remain in the United States and free until the Court reviews his constitutional claims,” Ragbir’s attorney R. Stanton Jones said.

Ragbir — who has been a US resident since 1994 — has a 2001 felony fraud conviction from which prompted a 2006 order of deportation that Ragbir had successfully challenged until his arrest last month.” [NY Post]

Video Part 2 – as they did the Immigrant March

“Reps for Ragbir — the Trinidad native — also announced that they will be filing a lawsuit in Manhattan federal court on Friday against ICE, Homeland Security, the Dept. of Justice and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to permanently stop officials from attempts to deport Ragbir and for relief for other immigrants rights activists who have also been targeted for deportation.” [NY Post]

“Ragbir slammed the Trump administration’s immigration policy […] calling it “ethnic cleansing.” [NY Daily News]

++ Then at NOON to 1:30 pm, the NY March For Immigrants’ Rally gathered in Herald Square

Their reasoning and accusations (as always) IGNORE the Rule of Law as the rail against the U.S. Government: “We are appalled by this administration’s attempt to pit immigrants against each other.”

We’re protesting against the anti-immigrant policies proposed by the White House and the GOP legislators, especially the recent White House proposal to end family reunification in exchange for DACA legalization.”

“Legal Immigrants, DACA and every American who opposes the anti-immigrant agenda are joining hands to fight racism, bigotry and xenophobia. United we stand, divided we fall.”

“There are roughly 7.5 billion human beings on this planet. None of them came from outer space, so none of them are aliens. So I refuse to call any human being an alien.”

“Furthermore, no human being is “illegal.
Any law that outlaws humanity is a bad and unjust law.

Apartheid was legal. That did not make it right. The human beings breaking Apartheid laws were humans fighting for justice, not “illegals.”

The Holocaust was legal. That did not make it right. Human beings breaking Holocaust laws were humans fighting for justice, not “illegals.”

“Slavery was legal. That did not make it right. Human beings fighting against slavery laws were not “illegals.” They were human beings fighting for justice.

Segregation was legal. That not make it right. Human Beings breaking Jim Crow laws were not “illegal.” They were human beings fighting for justice.”

“The earth has no lines on it. All borders are man made.
Crossing a man made line is only a crime because people have made it one.

People crossing a man made line are still human beings. They do not deserve to be detained or tortured. It is wrong to rip their families apart for any reason.

The earth belongs to all of us and we belong to it. Any human being should be able to live, with their family, any damn place they please on this planet.”

No human being is illegal. All this deportation of human beings is wrong and racist. There is absolutely no justification for treating human beings in this way.”  (This article was written by Claire Cohen.)#March4Immigrants
