Did You Hear the People Sing for Ukraine -Times Sq

Four Years, after the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, there is no end in sight.

On February 24, 2022
Russia launched a full-scale
invasion of Ukraine.

…. as documented by Ukrainian /American reporter, Oliya Fedun , the war was a serious invasion of their country. [https://x.com/ScooterCasterNY/status/1609025491406671874/video/1]

.Russia-Ukraine War. A war between Russia and Ukraine that began in February 2014 with the covert invasion of the Ukrainian autonomous republic of Crimea by disguised Russian troops. The conflict expanded in April 2014 when Russians and local proxy forces seized territory in Ukraine’s Donbas region; over the next seven years, more than 14,000 people would be killed in fighting in eastern Ukraine.”

Putin imagined this new  invasion would succeed quickly.Although Russian forces, in 2022,  made significant gains in the first days of combat, Ukrainian defenders rebuffed attempts to seize Kyiv and other major cities and were soon launching counterattacks at Russian positions.”

Three Days That Never Came:
Feb 24, 2026 update

How Russia Failed in Ukraine – so far –

A Russian drone set fire to a Kharkiv publishing house warehouse, incinerating millions of books Saturday — part of a systematic book-burning campaign by Vladimir Putin to erase Ukrainian identity.…The losses suffered from the devastating blaze could be close to $7 million,…More than 1.5 million books had already been destroyed in strikes on the Ukrainian book industry in July, as the Kremlin wages its campaign to destroy the country’s national identity, according to the Ukrainian Book Institute. The largest attack on the Ukrainian publishing industry saw some 900,000 books destroyed on July 2, while as many as 250,000 books were burned in a July 19 blitz on Kyiv….many schools will not receive textbooks in time for the start of the school year.  [https://nypost.com/2026/08/01/world-news/millions-of-ukrainian-books-incinerated-in-russian-drone-strike/]

July 2, 2026 The overnight barrage, which lasted for 11 hours, prompted residents to shelter in metro stations as explosions rocked the city. According to Ukrainian authorities, the barrage primarily targeted residential neighborhoods and civilian infrastructure, sparking fires and partially destroying several apartment buildings. This major escalation comes …  with Ukrainian forces separately reported to be maintaining pressure on Russian oil sectors and border regions. [1, 2, 3]

Flashback to Times Square – April 3, 2022.

A time when  passionate outrage was directed at ending Putin’s invasion of Ukraine:

Duffy Square aka Times Square

The Broadway community
held what they described as a musical vigil for Ukraine ….
during a relentless down pour.

Everyone was quite WET

Electronic billboards lit up the square in blue and yellow – the colors of the Ukrainian flag- as the volunteer choir sang  “Do You Hear the People Sing” – which also included a translated verse in Ukrainian with Ukrainian Americans in attendance.

”Ukraine says the goal is to take the war to Russia and to get Mr. Putin to agree to end the conflict. But Mr. Putin — even as his ability to isolate Russian society from the war’s effect has diminished — has expressed defiance and dug in.”

Actress and trans-activist. Shakina Nayfack , was inspired to organize this gathering following a conversation with her friend, the award-winning Ukrainian journalist,  Maxim Eristavi.

Shakina Nayfack

Edited video (there were many verses) of the performance in the rain; it includes the Ukranian verse.

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free

=== the Ukranians who sang that day===

Behind the barricades Is there a world you long to see?
Then join the fight That will give you the right to be free!
За барикадами Чи є світ, який ти прагнеш побачити?
Тоді приєднуйся до боротьби Ця дасть тобі право бути вільним!

And now the WOKE addendum  to the rally for UKRAINE.
(perhaps unnecessary)

Perhaps the media is failing
where these documentaries do not.

A documentary film by director Alan Badoev and channel «1+1 Ukraine», created from 200 hours of footage: the survival, resistance, and life of Ukrainians during the war.  More than four years into the full-scale war in Ukraine, millions of people remain displaced. Across Europe and beyond … In times like these, the right to seek safety matters more than ever.

Russia has now  launched its largest attack on the Ukrainian capital since mid-June 2026, collapsing apartment blocks. Local authorities have accused Moscow of deliberately killing civilians AND STEALING THE CHILDREN.

THE STOLEN CHILDREN!

More than 19,000 Ukrainian children have been documented as abducted or forcibly deported by Russia. Their names have been changed, their language forbidden, and many have been told that their families no longer want them. THE STOLEN CHILDREN follows Meaghan Mobbs, a combat veteran, West Point graduate, Director at the Center for American Safety and Security, Independent Women, and president of the R.T. Weatherman Foundation, as she travels to Ukraine to investigate one of the most devastating and underreported consequences of the war. Working alongside Ukrainian officials, human-rights investigators, and the frontline rescue teams of Save Ukraine, Meaghan helps bring international attention to the children who have been taken and the ongoing fight to bring them home. At the heart of the film are the children themselves. Through firsthand testimony, survivors share what they endured in Russian captivity, including forced separation, propaganda, imprisonment, torture, and efforts to erase their Ukrainian identity. THE STOLEN CHILDREN asks a question no viewer can easily set aside: If these were our children, what would we do? Every stolen child must come home. While the single phrase “Slava Ukraini” is commonly heard or seen around the world today, it is actually part of a call and response: “Slava Ukraini” is accompanied by the response “Heroiam slava!” (“Glory to the Heroes!”),  followed by “Slava natsiyi — smertʹ voroham!” (“Glory to the nation – death to the enemy!”),  ending with “Ukraina — ponad use” (“Ukraine — above all!”)

Slava Ukraini”

Belarus citizens(in Times Sq)say Stop Putin’s Russian Invasion NOW

Seems like every week a protest in support of Ukraine fills Duffy Square. So many I haven’t kept up. This one, however, caught my eye because it was Belarus vs Putin. But, I was confused, cause wasn’t Belarus siding with Putin? So WHO exactly was protesting on Sept 24, 2022 in Duffy Sq – NYC.

Belarussians Protest in Times Square, Putin’s Invasions.

But, I needed some info on “the Republic of Belarus :

“... a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. (…)[Wiki]

…” The European Union, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States have all imposed sanctions against Belarus because of their rigged 2020 election and political oppression during the ongoing protests in the country. Further sanctions were imposed in 2022 following the country’s role in the invasion of Ukraine.” [Wiki]

What I didn’t see were signs addressing their fears of war to include Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko. Why only to his mentor and comrade, Vladimir Putin? The Belarusian Enlightenment League of America (BELA) wants a no aggression pact, but the whole Russia,  Ukraine, Belarus terrain is riddled  with complications. But, clearly these protetors did not want WAR with Russia OR Ukraine.

UPDATE (3 weeks later) re the Lukashenko, Putin drama:

With Putin under pressure, Belarus edges closer to joining war in Ukraine [Reuters]

LONDON, Oct 12 (Reuters) – “A flurry of military activity in Belarus this week has caught the attention of Ukraine and the West as a potential sign that President Alexander Lukashenko may commit his army in support of Russia’s flailing war effort in Ukraine.

Lukashenko has ordered troops to deploy with Russian forces near the Ukraine border, and his defence ministry says “combat readiness” drills are under way. On Tuesday, the interior ministry held exercises to eliminate “sabotage groups” near Yelsk, only 20 km (12 miles) from the border with Ukraine.

France warned Belarus it could face more Western sanctions if it deepened its involvement in Ukraine.

Belarus allowed itself to be used as a launchpad for Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine but has not joined the fighting directly.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, global powers have picked sides and they have been pushing to isolate Russia. One nation that has stood unconditionally with Russia is its trusted ally Belarus. Russian President Vladimir Putin has constantly had Belarusian president Lukashenko‘s support even before the start of the Russian offensive. [WION you tube]

Oct 15, 2022 – Belarus Wavers as Putin Presses It to Join Ukraine War

“The country’s strongman, Aleksandr Lukashenko, finds himself in a bind. He survives with support from Russia, but entering the fight could be “political suicide.” [NY Times] “…two years ago after a fraud-tainted election, the Eastern European nation’s strongman leader, Aleksandr G. Lukashenko, was propped up by the Kremlin, which sent security officers and money to support him. Today, eight months after Russia invaded Ukraine, Mr. Lukashenko’s Russian-enabled grip on power risks slipping as Moscow pressures him to get more involved in the faltering military campaign next door in Ukraine.

Sadly, these protests do not seem to affect an end to war. Not with Putin in charge. Or, perhaps I just don’t have enough info.
